Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the past year (second year of the study), we have been able reconfirm the results of the first year's field data. The results have been consistent, and we are slowly beginning to see a clear seasonal trend in the oxygen and photosynthesis dynamics of both sargassum and seagrass ecosystems. We have continued to monitor dissolved oxygen concentrations, photosynthetic photon flux density, water temperature, chlorophyll-a concentrations, surface wind velocities, subsurface water velocities, as well as barometric pressure. In parallel, we have conducted a few experiments to examine how water velocity and canopy density affects photosynthesis rates and daily productivity. A number of presentations have been done and a manuscript is expected by the end of 2015.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Field studies are notorious for unexpected events that cause problems in data collection, and therefore the interpretation of the surveys. Our work is no exception, and we unfortunately lost a important pieces of equipment used in the study. However, given our schedule we did not lose much time and were able to complete our work during the more important seasons.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We plan to continue the survey, as outlined in the grant proposal. We should be able to complete all data collection this year, and plan to report our work internationally this year (2015).
