Outline of Annual Research Achievements

最終年度は完全養殖技術の確立において大きな障害となっている仔稚魚の形態異常について飼育実験を行った。回流型円形飼育水槽（クライゼルタンク）中の流速を5.7 cm/s 、6.7 cm/s 、7.4 cm/s 、8.3 cm/sの4段階に設定して186日間継続飼育した。飼育後レプトセファルスの成長率と形態異常の発症率を観察したところ、流速の大きい実験区ほどレプトセファルスの体サイズは有意に小さくなり、脊索後湾の形態異常を呈する個体の割合が高くなることがわかった。また、弱い水流であっても長期にわたる定常的な水流は55％以上のレプトセファルスに形態異常を引き起こすことがわかった。一方、シラスウナギにおいては水流による形態異常の割合に有意差は認められなかった。変態を完了して硬骨化したシラスウナギ稚魚についてAlizarin Redによる硬骨染色とX線撮影による脊椎骨の観察を行ったところ、半数以上に天然魚ではほとんどみられない計８種類（圧縮・脱臼・融合・短椎・変形・前湾・後湾・側湾）の形態異常が観察され、とくに尾椎に多く発症することが明らかになった。こうした形態異常をもつ仔稚魚の一部は遊泳・摂餌能力が低下し、重篤な場合は死亡につながる。健常なウナギ種苗生産の実現に向けて、各発育段階における最適な水流環境を整えることの重要性が示された。また、今後こうした流速の問題だけでなく、飼育水槽のサイズ、形状、注排水法、給餌方法、洗浄方法なども含めて飼育システム全体の設計・改良を総合的に行う必要がある。
