Outline of Final Research Achievements

To clarify the physiological role of solute carrier OCTN1 expressed in the central nervous system, we examined neural control mechanisms by OCTN1 and the possible application to treatment of depression. The obtained results suggest that OCTN1-mediated ergothioneine uptake may promote neuronal differentiation via activation of mTOR and induction of neurotrophic factors, orally ingested ergothioneine may promote neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus and alleviate symptoms of depression via the effects, and OCTN1 may modulate the pharmacological effects of antidepressants.
