Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have previously reported that bacterial flagellin (FLA) acts as an adjuvant to promote asthma by priming allergic sensitization to inhaled allergens. To determine whether FLA contribute in human asthma, we assessed titers of antibodies specific to FLA in sera from patients with asthma using Enzyme-linked immunoassay as an indirect measure of their exposure to FLA. Compared with healthy volunteers, subjects with asthma had slightly higher titers of antibodies to FLA, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. We next investigated the association between titers of antibodies to FLA in sera of asthmatics and the peripheral airway limitation. We found that asthmatics with higher titers of antibodies to FLA had peripheral airway limitation when compared to those with low titers of antibodies to FLA. This data suggest that FLA might represent a potential biomarker for the severity of asthma.
