| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The total number of olfactory marker protein (OMP) positive olfactory receptor neurons in the unilateral olfactory epithelium of adult mice was estimated by using stereology method.The number was approximately 5,000,000 in adult C57BL/6J mice.
Corresponding neuronal numbers were also estimated in newborn and adult Wistar rats. The numbers were approximately 500,000 in newborn rats and approximately 21,000,000 in 8 weeks old adult rats. In adult rats, the numbers of olfactory receptor neurons remained unchanged until 2 years old.
