Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We examined interactions between physical activity (including exercise) or inactivity, sleep and physical/mental health in the elderly. Physical activity was assessed continuously 24 h per day for >1 year using a specially adapted uniaxial pedometer/accelerometer with a filter specifically set to identify paces (modified Kenz Lifecorder, Suzuken, Nagoya, Aichi, Japan). Healthy adults without any disease showed greater physical activity (step count and duration at >3 metabolic equivalents [METs]), higher body temperature and better sleep efficiency than unhealthy persons with major lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
