Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Reading aloud is difficult for L2 learners. However, repeatedly reading aloud the same passage enables learners to enhance their automatized processing and produce more fluent performances. A new CALL system has been developed which can assess reading aloud both in terms of accuracy and fluency. The former is evaluated by one of the speech information technologies named GOP (Goodness of Pronunciation). The latter is assessed by automatic calculation of ROU (Rate of Utterance): the number of syllables per second. This system also calculates coefficient of variation (CV) which indicates the degree of automaticity of reading aloud. The results of the experiments in this study showed that ROU was more valid than GOP as an indicator of automatization in reading aloud and that CV could be used to measure the degree of automaticity in reading aloud, because the CVs significantly decreased as the repetition time went up and the proficiency levels of the participants increased.
