Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Mitochondria possess their own genome whose oxidative stress-induced mutations are thought to cause intractable disorders such as mitochondrial disease and aging. In this study, we aimed to transfer genes from mitochondria to the nucleus and express them. Particularly, we sought to (1) change codon usage for nuclear genes, (2) optimize codon usage for efficient protein synthesis via cytosolic ribosomes, and (3) target synthesized polypeptides to mitochondria by adding a presequence.
