Outline of Final Research Achievements

Experimental animals including mice and rats are usually used in research on medical science. However, we should recognize that experimental data from these animals may disparate in humans. We investigated availability of a small rodent, common marmoset, in research on bacterial infections containing toxins produced from Staphylococcus aureus.
Oral administration of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) induced emesis in common marmosets. Moreover, we found that SEs induced diarrhea and other staphylococcal toxins can induce emesis in common marmosets. Therefore, common marmoset is a useful animal model for research on bacterial infections.
