Femto-second time resolved observation of post-spinel transition using X-ray free electron laser

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

昨年度まで使用してきたパルス幅500ピコ秒のショートパルスレーザーに替わり、今年度はパルス幅3ナノ秒のロングパルスレーザーを使用したレーザー衝撃圧縮実験を行い、衝撃圧縮過程にある試料をX線自由電子レーザーによりその場観察した。試料には超高圧実験において変形量測定や弾性波速度測定の較正物質として使用され、また工業的にもファインセラミックス材などとして広く用いられている酸化アルミニウム（コランダム）を採用し、衝撃圧縮された際の応答挙動を時分割観察した。
厚さ20ミクロンのコランダム多結晶試料に対しロングパルス高強度ポンプレーザーを照射した後、数ナノ秒から十数ナノ秒までの間を500ナノ秒から1ナノ秒間隔で遅延時間を変化させながら、パルス幅10フェムト秒のX線自由電子レーザーを照射しX線回折測定することで、衝撃波が伝播している最中のコランダムの格子面間隔の変化を完全なスナップショットとして捉えた。一連の時分割測定の結果、衝撃波がコランダムに到達した直後は、コランダムが平均1ミクロン程度の初期粒径を保ったまま数万気圧程度までわずかに圧縮され、その数ナノ秒後わずか500ナノ秒以下の極短時間に、粒径が100ナノメートル以下にまで砕かれると同時に50万気圧程度まで圧縮される様子を、初めて明確にその場観察することができた。また圧縮された試料はパルス状衝撃波通過が通過し衝撃波の先頭が端面に到達した直後には、500ナノ秒以下の短時間の間に数十万気圧という圧縮状態からマイナス十万気圧に相当する引張状態に転化した。
これらの実験結果に基づき国内の学会で研究発表を行い、論文投稿にむけて準備を開始した。
