Research Abstract |
In Fiscal Year 2013, the focus of this research was on the effect studying abroad for a very short time (i.e., less than two weeks) has on the level of motivation and use of metacognitive skills by participants. In order to gain an insight to these effects, the researcher conducted studies with students from junior high school, senior high school and university. Also, the research attended conferences within Japan to share findings and study further about motivation in an EFL environment. The researcher also traveled to Australia with university students in order to observe first hand different aspects that may affect students' motivation while abroad. In addition to the above activities, the researcher conducted some minor studies related to using technology in the classroom and its effect on the motivation of students. This included some presentations and published papers to assist preparations for the research focus of Fiscal Year 2014.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This research is progressing smoothly. Due to some technology-related issues at one school, the researcher was unable to conduct one intended project, but was able to make up for this in another area. In order to share results of this research, the researcher has been able to publish results of this research. e.g., Leis, A. (2014). The effects of a study abroad experience on the L2 Motivational Self and metacognitive skills: A study of a junior high school trip abroad. Bulletin of Miyagi University of Education, 48. 199-209. Furthermore, the research attended junior and senior high schools in the Tohoku region to discuss methods to make a successful study abroad program with teachers, and give suggestions to students about ways to get the most out for their study abroad experience. Preparations for research in Fiscal Year 2014, which started in Fiscal Year 2013, have also been progressing very smoothly.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This research will continue on its intended path, moving the focus away from that on studying abroad, to the effect of using technology (e.g., tablet computers, and social networking systems) on the motivation levels of students. This research will include comparing classes using textbooks available on tablet computers and the paper version of the same textbook.
