Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In Fiscal Year 2014, the focus of this research, whilst still including aspects of the effects of studying abroad on Japanese junior and senior high school students as well as university students, moved towards CALL, especially the effects of paperless classes, learning and flipped learning.

First, I published papers as well as conducted public presentations for other researchers at academic conferences, for teachers at junior and senior high schools and students at junior and senior high schools in order to give advice to make participants' study abroad experience more satisfactory. Second, I participated in a conference in Nottingham, England, where the world's leading researchers of L2 motivation were gathered to discussed latest and future trends in motivation research. I also travelled to Australia to gain insight to the degree to which CALL is being used abroad in comparison to that in Japan. Third, in preparation for the third year of this study, I prepared and conducted flipped classrooms and will focus the third year of this study on the effects flipped learning has on the motivation and proficiency of students.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

This research is progressing smoothly. I have conducted presentations at various conferences (e.g., AILA World Congress in Brisbane, Australia) about the results of my research pertaining to study abroad. Also, I had papers published (e.g., Leis, A. (2015). Study abroad and willingness to communicate: A case study at junior high school. The Language Teacher 39(2). 3-9.) based on research conducted in this study.

Preparations for the study in Fiscal Year 2015 have been progressing very smoothly.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

This research will continue on its intended path with a focus on CALL, in particular flipped learning, in Fiscal Year 2015.

Causes of Carryover

Although initially I had planned to buy several tablet computers, the number actually bought was much less.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

Differences will be used to pay native speakers of English to mark compositions to gain fair indications in increases or decreases of proficiency in the third year of this study.
