Research Abstract |
During this year, as we planned, the following tasks have been carried out: 1) An study about the frequency distribution of function words (articles, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions) in academic Spanish texts written by natives vs. learners, which has showed that Japanese learners of Spanish overuse certain words in each category and underuse word classes for which there is no correspondence in their mother tongue or which make the sentence more complex. 2) An experiment about article error annotation of learner texts. A dataset of 300 sentences has been tagged by multiple annotators and inter-annotator agreement has been studied.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As we planned, we have studied the reliability of the annotation of learner texts with article error information, and the writing of a set of CG rules to automatically detect article errors is being carried out.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The future plan is 1) to accomplish the writing of a set of rules in CG format to detect and correct article errors, and 2) to annotate a learner corpus with preposition error information, write a set of rules in CG format to detect and correct preposition errors and evaluate the grammar rules in a learner corpus taking into account the results of the experiment on annotation reliability.

Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding |
The reason why some amount is left to be used during the next fiscal year is that I attended a conference in the end of the fiscal year (March 22-25), and the expenses for this conference (daily allowance, etc.) were lower than expected, so that resulted in some money left at the end of the fiscal year. I plan to use this amount for attending another international conference during the next fiscal year.
