| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During this year, the following tasks have been carried out. First, using the results of our previous experiment on article error annotation of learner texts, we have designed and evaluated an annotation scheme for article errors. After studying measures to increase reliability, we have applied the refined annotation scheme to a 30,000 words fragment. Second, we have studied the overuse and underuse of function words (articles, prepositions, pronouns and conjunctions) in a learner corpus made up of texts written by Japanese students of Spanish. From these frequency patterns, we have extracted some conclusions and suggestions about the learners' writing strategies. The error patterns involving prepositions are being used to write rules in CG format for error detection and correction.

Reason
As we planned, we have studied article error reliability and the frequency distribution of other function words (prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions). We are in the process of writing rules for error detection concerning prepositions.

The future plan is to extend the error study to other function words like pronouns and conjunctions, and to formalize rules for automatic detection and correction.

| Causes of Carryover |
A small amount is left to be used during the next fiscal year because I was on travel at the end of the fiscal year (February 23th- March 19), and the expenses for this travel were slightly lower than expected.
