Research Abstract |
The research plan for FY2013 focused on three areas. 1) Fieldwork at Goshono site on reconstructions of Jomon dwellings, 2) research on World Heritage campaign for Jomon archaeological sites in Tohoku, and 3) library research at the East Asian Archaeology Laboratory. Research has been proceeding smoothly with three field excursions to Tohoku and presentation of research results on four separate occasions. Results of field research trips are as follows. The first visit allowed me to view the ongoing research and maintenance of Jomon pit dwelling reconstructions at Goshono. This trip also involved visits and introductions to directors and other staff at Tohoku Jomon sites and museums including: Korekawa site, Sannai Maruyama site, Morioka Historical Museum, and Morioka Study Museum of Archaeological Site. The second visit corresponded with an International Symposium on the pursuit for designation as World Heritage by 18 Jomon period sites in Tohoku. This allowed me to meet relevant scholars, administrators, and UNESCO delegates. The third trip corresponded with an lecture given at Goshono site and also allowed for gathering necessary documents for the writing of a research article. Additionally, three academic talks have been given during a workshop series organised by myself and faculty at the International Center for Cultural Resource Studies at Kanazawa University under the theme of "Archaeology and Contemporary Society: Representation in Japanese Archaeology."

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Research plan for FY2013 focused on three areas. 1) Fieldwork at Goshono site on reconstructions of Jomon dwellings, 2) research on World Heritage campaign for Jomon archaeological sites in Tohoku, and 3) library research at the East Asian Archaeology Laboratory. Research at Goshono has gone better than expected, allowing intensive research to be conducted on-site at during three visits. Research on the campaign for World Heritage status has also proceeded smoothly, including attendance at an International Symposium in Morioka City where I was able to interview many of the administrators and scholars involved in the nomination process. Limitations of funding was the primary reason it was impossible to conduct research at the East Asian Archaeological Laboratory, although this has not been a limitation to pursuing research on the themes outlined in the research proposal as some fieldwork on this topic has been done previously and much can be done through reviewing literature on the topic.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Research for FY2014-2015 will proceed largely as initially proposed. This includes research at Nara National Institute for Cultural Properties, research on education of archaeology students at Kanazawa Gakuin University, research at the East Asian Archaeology Laboratory at Berkeley University. Presentations of research have already been planned for May 2014 at the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Science 2014 meeting. A collaborative research paper is currently being written with Goshono site director Takada Kazunori on the theme of Reconstructed Archaeological Buildings.

Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding |
The remaining funds were a result of not being able to conduct field research at the East Asian Archaeology Laboratory at University of California, Berkeley. The funds will be used next year to conduct research trips to Nara, Iwate, and sites in the Tohoku region. Two presentations at academic conferences are also planned in Chiba (International Union for Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences) and Tokyo (Anthropology of Japan in Japan).
