Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have investigated the effect of non-covalent interaction between matal oxide particle surface and organic molecules in organic solvents on polymerization rate of controlled radical polymerization and monomer selectivity in that polymerization system. Obvious increase in polymerization rate was observed when PEO macromonomer having a methacryloyl group at the end was used as a monomer and zinc oxide or silica gel particles were used as matal oxide. Non-covalent interaction such as hydrogen bonding interaction between the ether group in the macomononer and hydroxy grupe on the metal oxide surface is strongly suggested. Monomer selectivity was not observed in copolymerization of PEO macromonomers and polystyrene macromonomers. However, it was suggested that the polymerization rate in the presence of metal oxide system is affected by the molecular weight of the macromonomer.
