Learning and memory is important function since it regulates animal's future behavior. Previous memory studies identified brain regions involved in learning and memory. However, functional circuits within the regions and their relationship with other brain regions are unclear. This study showed the neuronal circuit mechanisms in the frontal association cortex (FrA) underlying learning and memory. We analyzed expression patterns of Arc, an immediate early gene, and showed that the FrA are activated by context and shock and that a subset of FrA neurons responds to both stimuli. FrA neurons receive context information from the perirhinal cortex and shock information from the insular cortex. This convergent information in the FrA should be important for learning and memory.
