本研究のpilot studyは横浜市立大学附属病院の臨床研究倫理委員会において平成21年に「無線式pHモニタリングとカプセル内視鏡を用いたボランティアに対する小腸のpHの観察と検討」の題名で承認され、健常ボランティアにおける小腸の画像とpHを同時に測定できることを証明した（Iida H, Endo H, Sekino Y et al. A New Non-Invasive Modality for Recording Sequential Images and the pH of the Small Bowel. Hepatogastroenterology. 59:413-414.2012)。また、このmodalityは国内特許を出願している（特願2009-234745）。昨年度までに15例を施行しており、これを20例に増やし、健常人の消化管の部位ごとのpH測定と検討を行った。
1988年にEvansraが、「pH sensitive radiotelemetry capsule」を用いて、X線を用いて右下腹部に到達した時点を盲腸と定義し、小腸と大腸のpHを測定し、回腸末端から大腸に入るとpHは下降するとGUTに発表した（D F Evans, G Pye, R Bramley, et al. Measurement of gastrointestinal pH profiles in normal ambulant human subjects. Gut. 1988;29:1035-41）。しかしEvansらの測定では、視覚的に小腸と大腸の境界は明らかでない。そこで、我々の開発した画像とpHを同時に測定できる「pHカプセル」を用いて、回腸末端から大腸にかけてpHが下降することを新たな知見として確認した。
