Outline of Final Research Achievements |
For primary gastric cancer to metastasize, it is necessary for tumor cells to circulate in the peripheral blood as a viable state. In this study, viable circulating tumor cells (CTCs) were successfully detected in nearly 40% of patients with highly advanced gastric cancer. Moreover, tumors of patients with positive CTCs were shown to progress earlier. Detecting CTCs can be clinically applied for selecting optimal patients for induction chemotherapy and would be useful for monitoring of therapeutic effect.
