音源定位のメカニズムについては多くの心理学的・神経生理学的な研究があるが、その多くが水平方向（左右）の情報処理に関するものであり、音源までの距離（奥行き）を推定するメカニズムに関してはほとんど明らかになっていない。本研究は脳波（EEG）・脳磁図（MEG）を用いて、音源までの距離知覚のメカニズムを心理学的・神経生理学的に明らかにするためのプロジェクトであった。
