Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Questionnaire survey on methods of making airag (fermented horse milk) was conducted to 60 herder families in a famous airag-producing region in Mongolia in August 2015. According to the herders' perception and traditional knowledge, adjusting ratio of yeast and milk, controlling fermentation temperature, and selecting good yeast and traditional container are important to produce high-quality of airag. Among the environmental variables, plant species and productivity were the most cited factors on determining quality and quantity of airag in this region. Number of herders who produce yeast was very few (3-4 persons) and most of herders have willing to learn produce yeast.
Analysis on movement parameters and effects of environmental variables on movement pattern of three mother horses was conducted. Variable contribution for habitat suitability demonstrated that the distance to milking place is the main factor on prediction of habitat suitability during the milking periods and non-milking periods. Significantly greater range during the non-milking period (nighttime) than the milking period (daytime) reflected the spatial distributions of water, salt, and forage availability. The horses initially used similar areas during the milking periods and gradually shifted their daily home ranges after several days. This shift suggests that the horses grazed farther afield as forage availability declined around the milking sites.
