Research Abstract |
1. The researcher has conducted a desk research which included a literature review of the research questions (the concept of human security, poverty in socialist and post-socialist countries; role of state in this process). Also, the researcher has conducted several preparatory interviews (over telephone, Skype, e-mails) with the experts of CADI in Bishkek and CPSin Tashkent. Their recommendations were useful for preparing Questionnaires and Interview Guides. 2. The researcher has conducted a fieldwork in towns and cities of Ferghana Valley in Uzbekistan in January, 2014. He was able to interview 21 citizens, 6 community leaders, 7 workers of local NGOs and experts, 2 mass media and 1 government officials. He has visited cities of Ferghana, Marghilan, Namangan, Andijan, Qoqon. 3. The researcher has conducted a fieldwork towns and cities of in Kyrgyzstan in February & March, 2014. The researcher spent several days working at the Central Archives in Bishkek, where he managed to access important documents. Then he had visited three cities in Kyrgyzstan (Osh, Djalalabad, Uzgen). He conducted 16 interviews with residents and community leaders and experts. 4. The undertaken desk research and fieldworks in two countries (Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan) was significant because they helped the researcher to understand the historical, political, economic and socio-cultural conditions leading to poverty and to study the role of the state. The data collected so far is critical to the research objectives, yet the researcher will seek to enrich these data during his next fieldworks.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research is progressing smoothly because the researcher was able to conduct all fieldwork, collect desirable data, interview all of the categories of respondents whose responses will help to answer research questions, and in general, understand the real state of human security in this region.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The researcher will continue to investigate this research problem, but in 2014 he will focus on the relationship between poverty and conflict in post-Socialist states of Central Asia. All fieldworks will employ the “focus group” interviews as a method of data collection, because it provides wider possibility for the analysis of group behaviour and perception. The researcher has started to process the collected data at the moment (April 2014). By June-August he is planning to start publishing his preliminary findings and promote the newly generated ideas among the academic community.
