Research Abstract |
In this study, we have developed general approaches to study the anisotropic thermoelectric properties of conducting polymer films. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity at both through-plane and in-plane directions can be measured with high accuracy. The bench-mark conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS was used as an example here. This study suggested PEDOT:PSS films have an anisotropic carrier transport properties and thermal conductivity. The anisotropic carrier transport properties can be explained by the lamellar structure of the PEDOT:PSS films. The anisotropic thermal conductivity could be attributed to the lattice contribution from PSS since the polymer chain is oriented along the substrate.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The study on the through-plane Seebeck coefficient and through-plane four probe conductivity measurement take some time. The reliable set-up is modified for several times.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will try to further improve the thermometric properties of conducting polymers based our current results. One straight forward approach is to reduce the in-plane thermal conductivity by using a small molecule dopant.Another possible approach is trying to achieve optimized power factor through the controlling of PEDOT crystal orientations by controlling the film formation conditions.
