浅部すべりの駆動源が何で、どのように応力が蓄積するのかを明らかにしようとする点に学術的意義がある。時間差を持った掘削データを解析することで、２つの対立仮説のどちらがより確からしいかを示し、プレート境界の深部と浅部における固着域の関連性に関する新しい知見が期待できる。
