Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1. Voices from Tohoku (a) We have made very good progress in the last phase of our collection process. So far, we have a little more than 500 hours of video oral narratives collected and archived (b)We are about 80% finished in completing the metadata for each piece of video (c) We are about 50% finished in checking all of the transcriptions (d) We have begun the translation process of this material; 30% finished (e) Of the thousands of clips that are on our website (tohokukaranokoe.org), we have checked the links, the documentation, sound quality and accuracy of the transcription. (f) We have employed the web expert to optimize the quality of the website and the facilitation of the navigation
2. Voices of Engagement in Civil Society (a) As we close the Voices of Tohoku to new data collection, we have successfully shifted our fieldsites to Tokyo and Kanto. This represents a major accomplishment as we use this innovative method in ways and themes that address issues far beyond disaster and Tohoku (b) So far, we have collected about 200 hours of digital oral narrative (c) These are all been transcribed, and they are being checked now
3. Presentation of Materials and Publication: During the past year, we have published articles in 4 journals, and presented the materials at both international conferences as well as given invited lectures at UCA in London, Bogazici University, Istanbul Turkey. University of Zurich, Switzerland, Harvard U., and Columbia U. in the USA., and various universities in Japan, including Tohoku U and United Nations University.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Through good luck and the diligent work of our staff, we have been able to stick to our plan as presented. In fact, we have been able to make better progress than we had thought in terms of the all important data collection. This fast rate of data collection has resulted in a somewhat slower relative progress in the post-production activities of transcription checking but our over all progress on the archiving of the total data set and the production of progress of the website is still on track.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

1. Voices from Tohoku (a) The primary challenge for this final year for Voices of Tohoku is to complete the post-production processing of all of the digital video materials. (b) We will try to complete the rest of the meta-data so we have as complete as possible a record of all data collected during the project. (c) We will move forward with the checking of transcriptions of the data as possible by our budget. (d) As a result, we will probably have to cut back a bit on the translation of all of this material. (e) Because the site is already open, our web work will focus on optimization of the material that is already up.
2. Voices of Engagement in Civil Society (a) We will continue to collect new data on civil society engagement, adding at least another 100 hours this year of video oral narrative data. (b) This will entaile video production and post-production, an increase in the level of sophistication of both sound and video equipment. This will allow increased appeal and use of the site in a more professional and accomplished way. (c) Of course, this will also require more post-production work: video and audio checking, transcription checking and translation.
3. Presentation of Research Results and Publications (a) Because this is the final year of the project, we will limit our international travel due to budget constraints. (b) We will present our material in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and Sendai. (c) We will produce an edited volume this year, under contract with the University of Hawaii Press, Alternative Politics.
