Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Measuring the positions, kinematics, chemical abundances of stars is important in understanding the structure and evolution of the Milky Way galaxy. In its disk region, a large amount of gas and dust co-exist with stars, and the strong interstellar extinction caused by dust makes observations in the visible difficult or impossible. Our research focuses on infrared observations, both photometric and spectroscopic, which can penetrate the interstellar extinction. We installed the high-resolution mode to our near-infrared spectrograph, WINERED, and developed methods and data sets necessary for analysis of the near-infrared high-resolution spectra. We also made achievements in studies on pulsating stars, which are behind the dust veil of the Milky Way disk, including the first discoveries of Cepheids in the flared part of the disk and carbon-rich Miras in the bulge.
