Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Oscillating grid turbulence subjected to system rotation was investigated experimentally and numerically. The experiment was carried out in a rectangular tank on a rotating table. For the experimental apparatus, some devices were introduced to inhibit the secondary circulation which is inherent in the system. In the numerical simulation, the Navier-Stokes equations were solved with the secondary conservative finite difference scheme on an ALE type moving grid. The quasi-two-dimensional vortex structure was visualized for the region distant from the oscillating grid for the rotating flow, while three-dimensional vortex structure was dominant close to the oscillating grid for both stationary and rotating systems. The turbulence decay and its inhabitation by rotation were also indicated in addition to standard turbulence statistics. In the developing stage of the quasi-two-dimensional vortex structure in the rotating system, the inertial wave propagation was specified.
