Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、電気光学ポリマーを用いた光変調デバイスの高性能化を目指し、特にシリコンなどの高屈折率導波路と複合化したハイブリッド変調器を作製することで低電圧動作と超高速応答を実現することを目的としている。本年度は研究目的の達成のためハイブリッド変調器の作製、モードの最適化、ポーリングの最適化、および高周波動作の解析など検討を行った。ハイブリッド構造の最適化では、薄膜シリコンを使った新たなハイブリッド構造について検討し、理論的なモード解析と相補的に考察することによって最大限に電気光学特性が得られる導波路構造を決定した。電気光学ポリマーの合成では、熱安定性向上のための化学構造の改良進めガラス転移温度の高温化をした。これらのポリマーの熱特性をもとに導波路のポーリング条件の検討を行った。以上の諸条件を検討して得られたハイブリッド光変調器の半波長電圧は0.9Vであり、本研究で目的とした1V以下の動作電圧の低減化を実現した。高速変調の実験では進行波型電極を組み込んだ導波路の、帯域特性の評価を行った。その結果、3dB帯域で24GHzの帯域特性を得た。6dB帯域では40GHzの広変調も可能であり、ポリマー変調器特有の高周波数応答特性を確認した。作製したシリコン-EOポリマーハイブリッド導波路をシリコンフォトニクスの研究分野に展開するために、シリコン細線導波路への光結合について検討を行った。ハイブリッド導波路の薄膜シリコン導波路とシリコン細線導波路間をテーパー結合器を使って結合し、その結合損失等について評価を行ったところ低損失で結合できることを明らかにした。以上によって、シリコン光導波路技術にポリマー技術を融合した高度化デバイスの作製についても本研究で実施した。
