Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the first year of this project, activities have been carried out separately by the five research group members and joint meetings have been conducted as in the original plan.
Jan-Dirk Schmoecker, the PI of this project, looked at London smart card data analysing whether the fare changes of zone boundaries have an impact on trip distribution. Growth model processes have been used for this. The analysis is still ongoing and jointly conducted with a Master course student. In addition the work on WP3 has also already started. The core idea for an assignment that considers non-linear fares is established, though the implementation is not yet completed. Hiroshi Shimamoto has also looked at Oyster card data and looked at whether the "daily price cap had an effect. Daisuke Fukuda has been looking at departure time choice of commuters and fare sensitivies. Fumitaka Kurauchi has started to work on this project by a slightly different angle, that is looking at the effect of highway fares system and findings are thought to be of value for this project also. Hideki Yaginuma has been further refining his work on transit assignment models which will be needed during later stages of this project. In addition in the joint meetings advantages and rationality for different fare systems have been discussed, though WP 1 is not as complete as desired. In summary, the team has progressed as planned or more than planned for WPs 2 and 3 though is slightly behind for WP1.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As described in above report on research achievements, all group members have been contributing as planned. There is a slight delay in one work package, but. instead, work has already started in another workpackage.
The reason for delay in workpackage 1 is that data have been more difficult to obtain than envisaged.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

As planned in the proposal in H27 the efforts on development of assignment approach for frequency-based transit assignment and considering non-linear fares will be increased. The main idea that is followed currently is to include a vector describing "the hyperpath history of a person" into the assignment approach. This way origin depending different fares on the same link can be described. For better completion of work package 1 conducting a survey among transit opertors is still contemplated. The main issue is that such a survey most probably will need to be done in personal interview form.
In general, each project member will continue activities started in H26. The next group meeting is planned for June this year.

Causes of Carryover

The main reason for the remaining budget is that some equipment purchase could be postponed until this financial year. The student working on the project so far used laptop and PC of a previous student. Furthermore, the costs for the visit of Dr Achille Fonzone were not as expensive as expected.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

The equipment purchases for this financial year will be slightly above the planned costs for this financial year. Furthermore, the data processing work required for work package 2 is more time consuming and more complex than expected. Therefore, Dr. Fajar Belgiawan, currently a postdoctoral research assistant in the laboratory of Prof. Fujii will support this project so that costs for human resources will also exceed the costs originally anticipated.
