Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research achievements can be split into two main contributions. 1. Development of an algorithm that searches for the shortest hyperpath considering non-additive link costs. This is important for frequency-based transit assignment with distance-based fare structures where customers pay according to the length of route they choose. It is common that fares are degressive in that the marginal costs per distance is decreasing for longer trips. Dealing with this efficiently has until now been an unsolved problem. The developed approach has been tested and appears to be robust and fairly fast. Currently discussions on implementation into mainstream software are ongoing. 2. Interviews and surveys with a range of metropolitan cities which are considering fare structure changes. The research documented contrary trends for some cities aiming for more complex fare structures using e-tickets whereas other cities aim for simple fare structures. This has led to a report published by "European Metropolitan Transit Authorities". Besides these main research outcomes the project discussed fare structure ideas such as price-capping and looked into effects of peak prices. Furthermore, the feasability of using data collected from electronic data for travel behavior analysis has been explored in detail. These has supported the publication of a book titled "Public Transport Planning with Smart Card Data".
