Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2015年度は，翻訳書を2冊出版し，国際会議の会議録を一般書籍としてアメリカ数学会(AMS)から出版し，審査つきの英語論文を6編，国際会議での発表を12件行った．その中でも特筆すべき業績を以下にまとめる．
・Origami6の出版：2014年，「折紙の科学」に関する国際会議6OSMEが開催された．この会議で発表を1件行う一方で，6名の編集者の一人として，この会議録の書籍化に貢献した．最終的には2016年1月にAMSからOrigami6という書籍として発行された．これは2冊組で744ページの大著となった．現時点での折紙サイエンスの最先端を世の中に知らしめることができた．
・折紙の折りにくさに関する研究：スーパーサイエンスハイスクールの高校生たちとの共同研究をベースに，折紙の折りにくさに関する数理モデルを提案し，その有効性を確かめた．この研究はアメリカ機械学会の国際会議で採択され，アメリカのボストンで発表を行った．
・複数の立体が折れる共通の展開図：一つの多角形からは，糊付けするところを変えれば，一般に数多くの多面体を折ることができる．中でも正多面体やジョンソンザルガラー立体と呼ばれる規則的な立体について，これらが互いに共通の展開図をもつかどうか，網羅的な研究を行った．特にこうした問題を高速に解くためのアルゴリズムやデータ構造を提案・実装し，立体同士の相互の関係を明らかにした．
・折紙の重なりを少なくするための研究：紙を折り畳んだとき，重ねる順序によって，全体の厚みが大きく違ってくる．こうした問題に対してモデル化を提案し，この問題の難しさを明らかにした．さらにそれを解くための枠組みやアルゴリズムも提案した．

Reason

現状は大きく二つの方向性で研究を進めている．
一つ目は，多面体と，それを展開して得られる展開図の間の関係の研究である．数理的な側面での結果は，まだ十分ではないが，実際にプログラムを作る上での効率的なデータ構造やアルゴリズムについては，研究は大きく進展した．その結果，これまでは組合せが爆発的に増えるために解析できなかった場合でも，実際にプログラムを作って解析できるようになり，新たな結果が得られている．
二つ目は，平坦な紙を折りたたんだ時の厚みに関する研究である．過去の研究においては，1次元的な紙，つまり紙テープのような細長い紙を，等間隔の折り目で折るという，極めて単純な場合についてしかわかっていなかったが，これを二次元的な普通の紙にして，折りにくさを考える上での新しい指標を導入したり，等間隔でなく，一般的な間隔にすることで，問題がどのように難しくなるかを研究した．特に折り目を等間隔でなくした瞬間，紙の厚みの評価基準について，いくつかのまったく異なる評価基準が，それぞれに妥当性を持つことがわかった．つまり，一般の紙を折りたたむときに，その厚みを最小化したいという問題は，自然で妥当性があるが，どのような指標を考えるかによって，問題の妥当性や困難性に違いが出てくることがわかった．こうした観点での研究はこれまでほとんど行われておらず，数理的な側面や，コンピュータで解析するといった側面から，さまざまな発展の可能性が考えられる．

Strategy for Future Research Activity

基本的には現在までの方向性を維持しつつ，今後の応用を見据えたアルゴリズムの研究と開発を続ける予定である．
多面体と展開図の関係については，引き続きより一般的なケースへの拡張を進めていく．特にスーパーコンピュータなどの計算パワーを活用し，これまで解析ができなかった研究領域の開拓にむけて研究を進めていく予定である．スパコンを使う場合，大量のデータを効率よく共有するアルゴリズムの開発が不可欠となるであろう．
折り畳みの複雑さについては，これまで「１次元から２次元へ」という拡張と「等間隔の折り目から一般の間隔の折り目へ」という拡張をそれぞれ行ってきたので，これらを統合し，通常の2次元平面の一般的な折り畳みという統合を行っていく予定である．途中の段階として，例えば水平・垂直方向の折りに加えて，対角線45度の折り線を扱うといった中間目標も設定できるため，こうした段階を踏んだ研究を進めていく予定である．
また，今後はより幅広い応用を見据えた研究の発展も視野に入れる予定である．例えば効率の良い梱包を扱える理論的な枠組みや，生物の形態形成における折り畳みのメカニズムなど，単なる理論にとどまらない次のステップへとつながる研究も同時に行っていく．
