Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The coastal era of modern whaling in Japan was described with the in-house documents of Toyo Hogei (Oriental Whaling Co.), business reports for the stockholder general meeting, and photographs at that time. Toyo Hogei, which have 80% of whaling stations and whaling boats, expanded the fishing operation by establishing new whaling stations in the Yellow Sea and the Kuril Islands. It was proved with the evidence in historical documents that the company was able to make fishing operation efficiently in whaling boats and workers through the year with integrated operations and role sharing in some stations. A whaling vessel voyaged from Taiwan to Abashiri in Hokkaido and the Yellow Sea during a year. The work of Norwegian gunners ended in the early 1930s, the proportion of which was high in Korea and low in Honshu and Hokkaido. The standard Japanese names of blue and fin whales were established from the in-house name of Toyo Hogei.
