Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
My research this year focused on a) temples moved from Fujiwarakyo 藤原京 to Nara in 710 and b) comparative analysis of painting materials and Esoteric (密教) aspects of icons in Japan and South Asia. I served as the chief editor and volume editor for a new Kyushu University juried journal in Asian Humanities, 『Journal of Asian Humanities at Kyushu University』 (JAH-Q). I gave three invited lectures internationally (Bhutan, University of Michigan USA) and domestic presentations at Kyoto University and Meiji Gakuin Daigaku, one at Kyushu University CAFS.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I made excellent progress on the proposed Nara-period temple investigations. My invited international and national lectures focused on Nara Buddist temples, especially Todaiji and Yakushiji but also shrines such as Kasuga Taisha, and late seventh-century temples moved from the Fujiwarakyo capital to Nara in 710. I furthered my understanding of archaeological investigations at Daianji and Yakushiji in Nara and the size of the compounds when the temples (in name or physically) were relocated. My research in Bhutan (funded by a separate grant) was reasonably productive and contributed to the knowledge needed for this Kaken research. The direct correlations were not as many as hoped, however, between Bhutanese esoteric paintings and Japanese esoteric paintings.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Regarding aspect a) above, I will continue research on the Yakushiji temple and publish one article in Japanese and one article in English this year H 28. A new aspect of my research is that I will investigate the material history of Moto-Yakushiji in the Fujiwarakyo capital.I will also present my work to US scholars at the Center for the Advanced Study of Visual Arts in Washington, D.C. Regarding aspect b) above (South Asian comparisons) there are few comparable styles of painting or iconography in Bhutan relating to eighth-century Nara period works, which makes comparisons difficult. I will change my plan to go to north India (Alchi) in H28 for this same reason.
