Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study tries to provide a fresh perspective to think about New York origin of American literature. By tracing in early American literature an expression of tolerance as a spirit peculiar to Dutch New York, this study has determined the generic identity of New York literature as a national discourse that revises American history in favor of such ideas of pluralism as ethnic diversity and democracy,as against New England's monolithic view of America as a WASP nation.
