Outline of Final Research Achievements

My research examines the representations of historical trauma in African American literature and visual art, that is, how African American writers and artists represent traumatic events from history and attempt to pass them on to the future generation. More specifically, my research focuses on how Toni Morrison not only attempts to reconstruct the traumatized history of African-American people but also to re-conceptualize the notions of race, history, and community through interactions with visual art in her historiographic works.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

歴史的トラウマ、すなわち共同体の過去におけるトラウマ的出来事（戦争、災害、テロ、植民地支配、疫病など）をどのように表象し次世代に伝えていくのかというテーマは、原爆投下や東日本大震災など、歴史的トラウマを抱える日本にとって極めて重要な課題である。奴隷制度という負の遺産をもつアフリカ系アメリカ文学と視覚芸術の研究を通して、共同体のトラウマを伝えていくために、文学や芸術の果たす役割がいかに重要であるかを明らかにした。
