Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Albert Camus's "Notebooks" were for a long time considered a primary, and, in a way,‘objective’source for insight into the writer's life and works. They were never published during his lifetime, seemingly left intact by his sudden death in a car accident in 1960. Yet Camus had typescripts of his "Notebooks" or "Cahiers" as he called them, and did revise and refine them. The focus of my study has been the manuscripts and typescripts of "Cahier I" and "Cahier VII", which are the most revised of the nine "Cahiers", in order to issue, in the near future, the critical edition of Camus's "Notebooks", which should shine a renewed light on his life and art. As a result of my investigations over three years at Bibliotheque Mejanes, city library of Aix-en-Provence, I have published a series of papers on Camus's revisions to the "Notebooks" as well as on the development of "Exile and the Kingdom", a 1957 collection of short stories, and the posthumously published novel "The First Man".
