Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project has revealed the following points. (i) In predicate formation in Japanese and its northern variations, more than one functional heads (i.e., v, Applicative, Cause, Voice, etc) together with a Root are involved. (ii) Grammaticalization is bi-directional; it not only turns a lexical or functional category into a functional category that appears in a higher structural position (i.e. functionalization), but it also may, conversely, turn a lexical category to a Root (i.e. radicalization). (iii) As exhibited by pre-Modern Korean and Kyungsang dialects, Korean has potentially allowed multiple suffixation (-Hi-Hi). However, due to phonologically reductive processes, -Hi-Hi has been reduced to -Hi in Standard Seoul Korean. Furthermore, radicalization does not seem to have taken place in Korean.
