Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
One goal of this project is to gather examples of use of the CEFR in Japan and beyond (CEFRの応用事例の収集). We held a one day conference on May 31st 2014 in Nagoya, which included two invited speakers, and ten speaker groups about implementation of the CEFR in Japan. We could hear reports about many of these examples. The contents of the proposed edited volume, which will disseminate the results of this project, have been finalised. Other research achievements focused on connecting with people to build research network(言語教育の改革・改善を支援するネットワークの構築), by presenting at conferences and holding workshops. We have established a network in in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan and Vietnam. This network is the base for creating constructive assessments of the use of the CEFR.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The second goal of the first year (評価基準の設定) was met: after several meetings and consultation we drafted the final version of the key questions that guide this project. We also conducted a survey which has helped us define the progress of the CEFR in Japan, and consider issues about further analysis, and questionnaires. We intend to conduct further analysis in the second year (聞き取り調査). The May 31st 2014 conference helped us achieve the first goal of the first year: to gather examples of use of the CEFR in Japan and beyond (CEFRの応用事例の収集). The contents of the proposed edited volume have been finalised. These contributions are firmly working toward the goals of the second year (CEFRの応用段階で生じると予測される問題とその解決方法の検討).
As a result of the extensive networking (see list of presentation) we feel the final year goal to build a network of CEFR professionals (言語教育の改革・改善を支援するネットワークの構築) is nearly complete. We have established a firm base on several levels in Japan, Europe, along with China, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The second year will very much focus on compiling final results of the edited volume, and developing workshop materials for educators in Japan to develop their practices. The first half will finalize content, with the second half preparing for submission to publisher. After that we will encourage writers to develop workshop material to let other educators learn from and apply their practices.
We plan to strengthen and expand ties in the research network in the second year, by holding a conference in June 6th in Tokyo. We have confirmed Professor. Yukio TONO (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies), developer of the CEFR-J, as main speaker. We will also hold a discussion, workshops and showcases of CEFR classroom implementation.
The remainder of the project will focus on disseminating results. We plan, in the final year, to hold a symposium. This will feature workshops by educators in our research network, and a main speaker from Europe. It may be the case that this speaker may only be available at the end of the second year, in March 2016. In that case, we will bring forward some of our plans. As other plans are advancing well, this will not have a big effect on the project overall.

Causes of Carryover |
One of the co-investigators has yet to use budget allocated (60,000 yen) for travel to conferences. There is a small amount remaining, which was allocated for other expenses
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The co-investigator in question has a plan to use all of budget for travel to conferences this year. The other small amount wll be used for expenses incurred this year
