Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this research, the investigator explored the use of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) as an English vocabulary learning tool. In the first stage of this research, a user-friendly game platform was selected and modified to meet the needs of EFL learners. Language learning tasks incorporating low frequency English vocabulary items were also field-tested with language learners. A successful pilot project was then undertaken. In the second stage of this research project, two longitudinal studies incorporating mixed methods were conducted over a period of two semesters. A variety of data sources were utilized. Data sources examined in this research included transcripts of learner interaction, research observation, scores on vocabulary tests, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Analysis of the test data reveals that for the majority of the participants, the game provided significant opportunities to improve retention of low frequency English vocabulary embedded in the tasks. Researcher observation indicated that the majority of the participants found undertaking language tasks in the game to be a highly engaging and motivating activity. Positive findings were also revealed in the participant feedback. In their responses, participants indicted that they found playing the game to be an enjoyable and beneficial activity. Participants noted that the game provided a low stress context for interaction that provided exposure to vocabulary not normally encountered in traditional learning settings.
