Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To rectify this gap of empirically-grounded materials and methods for the teaching of academic spoken negotiation we successfully held four Model United Nations conference for Japanese and non-Japanese University students at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, the Japan University Model United Nations (JUEMUN), the Tsukuba English Model United Nations (TEMUN), the National Model United Nations in Rome and New York, to collect baseline data of Japanese non-native speakers negotiation through audio and video recordings. The classrooms data was collected in Model United Nations classes while students were discussing at weekly over 15 weeks Kobe City University of Foreign Studies weekly, Kinki University and Meiji University and at Tsukuba University four times. We have begun to analyze the data by transcribing and then doing discourse analysis on the Model United Nations negotiation data against a negotiation framework. Nishide, Thorpe, and Tatsuki) did teacher education on Model United Nations at Meiji and Tsukuba University; and visiting teachers at JUEMUN 2014 from Hannan University, Kobe Kenristsu University and Konnan University. Teacher education was done in a 2-day workshop at Kobe Municipal Fukiai High School. Students from Senior High School at Otsuka, University of Tsukuba and Meikei High Schoo. Nishide was also an advisor to the Japan Model United Nations students at the United Nations University in Tokyo preparing for the National Model United Nations in New York.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We are on schedule as were able to collect data from 4 Model United Nations and classrooms preparing for Model United Nations but will keep collecting more data for analysis. This is because we need to collect data from more Japanese at international conferences abroad as there are few Japanese participants. This will add to the reliability and validity of our findings. We have started to do our transcription.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will use our 2015 funding primarily for transcription and more data collection. We will also collaborate with conversation analysis researchers on selected frames of recorded data to gather multiple perspectives. With some available funding we will to continue to collect data at the Japan University English Model United Nations hosted by Kinki University- June, 2015; the National Model United Nations in the Czech Republic- November, 2015; Tsukuba Model United Nations, November December 2015; Rome Model United Nations, March, 2016; and The National Model United Nations, 2016.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Tatsuki went to the National Model United Nations New York returning in April 2015. Thorpe is waiting for a new model for recording. Nishide was not able to prepare enough data to be transcribed.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
Nishide will use the funds for transcripion and Thorpe will by as digital recorder and Tatsuki has returned this April from a conference.
