Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To rectify this gap of empirically-grounded materials and methods for the teaching of academic spoken negotiation we successfully piloted our negotiation materials based on our discourse and conversational analysis in classes preparing for four Model United Nations conference for Japanese and non-Japanese University students. The conferences were the Japan University English Model United Nations (JUEMUN) (June 2017) hosted by Kobe City University of Foreign Studies,Tsukuba English Model United Nations (TEMUN) (December 2017) hosted by Tsukuba University, and the National Model United Nations (NMUN) in Banff, Canada (November 2017) and New York, U.S. (March 2018). Negotiation training materials were developed and piloted from the data analysis for the purposes of learning and using the language (recurrent grammar and phraseological patterns, function and purpose) of spoken negotiation; and focusing on the behavioral dynamics, both personal and interpersonal that can impact the negotiation process and negotiation outcomes. The effectiveness of the negotiation training materials were assessed through observations of students in Model United Nations simulations in English.
