| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study revealed that the interaction between Japanese learners of English carrying out information-exchanging tasks manifested such features of natural, spontaneous communication as the multifunctionality of an utterance and intention reading by the participants, which in turn generate collaborative discourses characterized by mutual assistance. At the same time, individual information-exchanging tasks gave rise to different interactional features, thus having their unique roles in facilitating second language development. On a longer time scale, retrospection by the learners on their own task-based production affected their subsequent performance in complex manners. On the practical side, an integrative framework has been developed for the task and task implementational variables.
