Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this research project is to consider the characteristic grammatical knowledge in English essays written by Japanese, Korean, and Chinese learners of English at universities in North America. We conducted the timed writing task and questionnaire about their learning experience in their own countries before studying abroad in North America. This research focused on grammatical knowledge, one of the four elements consisting of linguistic knowledges: especially, lexical knowledge, monphorogical knowledge, and syntactical knowledge. Thec effect by word orders of their own first languages in syntactic knowledge, but some differences can be clarified in terms of lexical knowledge, morphological knwoledge, and syntactic knowledge.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究成果の学術的意義として、日本人英語学習者の場合、留学前と留学後とでは、使用する統語知識については顕著な差異は見られなかったものの、使用する語彙知識、形態知識の差異が明らかになったことが挙げられる。また、社会的意義として、本研究によって、日本人が北米の大学に留学する際に求められる語彙知識、形態知識、統語知識をレベルを明らかにすることで、留学前に学習すべき項目を明確に把握し、学習準備を進めることができる可能性があると考えられる。
