Outline of Final Research Achievements

The vital statistics were developed in the nineteenth century in the Western countries and affected the establishment of the social insurance system and the social policy. This study first examines the theory and practice of William Farr who developed such statistics in Britain, and then compares the actual conditions of them in Britain with those in Japan to which the same statistics was adopted. Through the examination, this study elucidates the difference in the characteristics of the nation state from the viewpoint of the public health. During the term of four years that this study was given, I have investigated the William Farr papers and collected the duplications of the documents. I have also published some articles concerning the administration system of public health, including ‘A Reconsideration of the Medical Act of 1874’ (Otemae Journal, 16, 2016).
