Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research has aimed at making clear, in light of Puritanism originating in the Reformation as well as classical republicanism inspired by the governmental forms and writings of classical antiquity, the historical and ideological meanings of the Protectorate (1653-59) that Oliver Cromwell built in the second half of the Puritan Revolution.
Although the Cromwellian Protectorate has often been denigrated as a short-lived military dictatorship, it has been found out in this research that Cromwell intended to embody in this regime the principles of the Commonwealth as‘free state' by incorporating and cooperating both Puritanism and classical republicanism.
