Outline of Final Research Achievements

The aim of this research project was to analyze how Euro-Ottoman treaty relations developed historically based on original sources, both Ottoman and European. Thus, gathering original sources was vital. This 5-year project enabled the research on such sources in the archives and libraries of Turkey, England, and France.
Based on these original documents, this project attempted to place the Ottoman experience and elucidate its meaning in the context of the history of international law or of international relations. By doing so, it further sought to provide data to fathom the relationships between European and non-European states as a whole, and more specifically, its impact on the unequal commercial treaty system that covered East Asia.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

前近代から近代にかけてのヨーロッパ諸国と非ヨーロッパ諸国の関係については、日本では、専ら東アジアを中心に研究されてきた。しかし、東アジア以外の地域の実証研究はいまだ十分ではない。本研究が対象としたオスマン帝国は、ヨーロッパに隣接し、東アジアよりもはるかに長期かつ緊密にヨーロッパ諸国との関係を築き、その条約関係は日本も含む東アジアの「開国」条約の雛型ともなった。本研究は、重要かつ日本では看過されてきた中東とヨーロッパ諸国の関係を、オスマン帝国の条約関係を焦点として改めて検証し、実証と理論研究の相互の深化に寄与する事例を提供した意味で学術的意義がある。
