Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research investigated whether children with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) of developmental age 4 without mental delay are better at reversing ambiguous figure(AF) than typical developing children(TD) of the same age in two different conditions of presentation. In condition 1, only one AF (duck and rabbit) was presented, and in condition 2, the same two AF were simultaneously presented in two different positions. The ability of meta-representation was necessary for children to express two different contents for AF in condition 1, but not in condition 2.Half of TD children in condition 2 could report the two interpretations of AF, but it was still difficult for most in condition 1 to reverse the figure. In contrast, ASD children had much difficulty reporting the two interpretations in both the two conditions. Our findings revealed that ASD children faced as much difficulty as age-matched TD children in reversing AF when it was presented on its own.
