Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soybean and tomato. The soybean and tomato seedlings were cultivated under saline conditions. After cell wall extraction, the CEC of the samples were measured. Salt treatments decreased the CEC of the cell wall in both crops. Higher salt concentration had more severe effects on CEC. The tolerant cultivars showed higher CEC than the sensitive ones. 2. Physical properties of tomato and cotton. The physical properties of viscosity, elasticity and extensibility of root of the two crops under salinity treatments were measured. Salt treatments decreased the elasticity while it had no effects on the plasticity of the roots. The salt treatments had less effects on the elasticity of the salt tolerant cultivars compared with the sensitive ones.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Because all the experiments were conducted based on the research plan and no unexpected problems happened.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Data of physical properties (viscosity, elasticity and extensibility) of samples showed a high variation. So increasing the replication of each sample is needed. This requires more samples and costs more time for the measurements. Besides, the root of the crops under high salinity treatments (80 and 120 mM NaCl) became very fragile and most of the root samples were crushed and can not be used for the measurement. To obtain adequate and qualified samples, more seedlings need to be cultivated and more samples need to be taken. Therefore, the project is prolonged to year 2017 to complete the physical measurements on crop roots.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Because of the high variation of the data more measurements are needed to reduce the variation and obtain reliable results. Therefore, more experiments and more samples are required. Hence force, the project, especially the measurements on physical properties of the roots are prolonged to next fiscal year.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The budget for the next fiscal year will cover consumers for seedling cultivation, root sampling and chemicals. The budget will also cover the labor cost for instruments manipulation and measurements.
