Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We clarified the defensive function of caterpillar hairs. (1) Long hairs could protect middle and late instar larvae of Lemyra imparilis (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) from the insect predator Calosoma maximowiczi (Coleoptera: Carabidae). (2) Long and thick hairs of second and later instars of Lymantria dispar japonica (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) could function as a physical barrier against the parasitoid Meteorus pulchricornis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)
