本研究で開発された食道用の内視鏡的細胞シート移植デバイスは、平成28年8月より表在型食道がんの広範囲ESDを対象とした上皮細胞シート再生治療の臨床治験において、コンビネーション移植デバイスとしてPMDAから認可され治験が進められている。
また表在型食道がんの広範囲ESD後の狭窄予防を対象しただけではなく、食道領域のアンメットメディカルニーズとなっている難治性食道狭窄に関しても、ミニブタを用いた食道狭窄モデルを開発したことから、内視鏡的バルーン拡張術後の裂傷部位に表皮細胞シートを移植することにより、再狭窄軽減効果が認められて結果が得られたので、英文雑誌に報告した。(Kobayashi S, Kanai N, et al. Endoscopic International Open. 2016)
さらに難治性食道狭窄を対象とした新規再生治療によるヒト臨床研究を開始するため、成人の食道狭窄を対象とした成人用移植デバイス、小児先天性食道閉鎖症術後を対象とした小児用移植デバイス、さらに咽頭ESD後の移植用デバイスの3タイプの移植デバイスの開発を行った。この成果に関しては、平成29年2月22日に日経産業新聞で紹介された。
これらの研究成果により、小児の先天性食道閉鎖症術後の難治性食道狭窄を対象としたヒト臨床研究は、再生医療安全確保法に従って成育医療研究センターの特定再生医療等委員会で研究計画が審議中であり、成人の良性食道狭窄を対象とした上皮細胞シートとコンビネーション移植デバイスによるヒト臨床研究は、平成29年3月7日に九州大学特定認定再生医療等委員会により承認され、まもなく開始される予定となっている。
